This Friday, October 9, we will have the band Totem from Costa Rica (La Tribu) with us at OsloRock!
They have given us the privilege of presenting their album before its official release on October 12, so we are very flattered! Listen to our interview with them, Totem, a very interesting band, full of social values and fighters of our native peoples rights among many other things this band has to offer, so don’t miss this great conversation!
Semilla (Album: TBD / Year: 2020)
Is a sample of the personality that Totem has developed over a 17-year long career. This includes 4 studio albums, a live album and their tours through Cuba, Mexico and Central America.
Experimentation is the main hallmark of the band and the album ‘Semilla’ is not far from that.
The 7-string guitars, the Gankogui bell (from Benin), the Djembe (from Guinea, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Mali, among others), the Cuban harpsichord, the Gangan (from Benin), the Seses or Castañets (from Guinea), together with Mexican artisan drums, Bribri ocarinas, and guttural and melodic voices make this song an amalgam of the knowledge acquired and at the same time shared with the different cultures with which the band has touched in the last two years.
On October 12, 2020, Semilla will be released on all major digital music platforms, such as Spotify, Amazon music, iTunes, etc.
For Totem it is extremely special to release this single, the spearhead of what will be their fifth album, on the date of his seventeenth anniversary. Looking back 17 years and realizing the legacy that we have left with our music in so many Latin American generations and cultures fills us with joy and responsibility.
True to the style of recent years, the entire creative process behind this song was self-managed by the same band and occurred in Costa Rica during the quarantine lived in the months of March and September 2020 as a result of COVID-19. Being away, not only from our audience, but from each other, made us highly value the power of a hug and the power of a kiss.
The recording, mixing and mastering of the song was carried out by Edder Ortiz, the band’s guitarist and owner of Natual Records in Alajuela, using the facilities of La Cassettera, owned by Carlos Morera, the band’s vocalist.
